In Croatia, red wine is traditionally called "crno vino" (black wine) because the local grapes are so deeply pigmented and dark that they look nearly opaque in the glass.
A popular example is Saints Hills Black (often referred to as Black Dalmatian or Dalmatinsko Crno):
Grape Variety: 100% Plavac Mali, Croatia's iconic red grape and a natural offspring of Zinfandel (Tribidrag) and Dobričić.
Origin: Southern Dalmatia, crafted from a blend of coastal and island vineyards like Komarna and Dingač.
Flavor Profile: Intensive ruby-purple color with aromas of dark plum, wild cherry, thyme, oregano, and black pepper, complemented by a smooth palate of vanilla, dark chocolate, and earthiness.
Pairings: Best served with grilled meats, aged cheeses, peka, or traditional black risotto.
